From 17 - 19 November 2011, the second edition of Ko Gradi Grad? (Who Builds The City?) will take place in Belgrade. During three days, the focus will be on citizens that have come into action - as individuals, or as groups - to make their and our city a better place. Citizens that have decided that the first step to a better urban environment is to fix what is broken or create what is simply missing. Being it the lack of common spaces in the neighborhood, the care for the shared services of their apartment block or the stunning fact that basic infrastructure like water or sewer is decades late in arriving to their neighborhood. All of this can be fixed by people themselves - through direct action, legal procedures or even interventions that cross legal borders in order to provide for the urban necessities.
With this Summit of Urban Enthusiasts and Fixers, the second edition of Who Build The City? at Cultural Center REX heralds the drive of those getting into action - but also questions the significance of such actions in todays society. Is this simply the response to a dysfunctional society, or does it signal the emergence of a more active citizenship? With three intense days of accounts of urban action, workshops telling us how to proceed with our plans in our own cities, and discussions that bring the various positions to take onto the foreground, this summit will delve into the perspectives of the making and taking - with our own hands.
Who Builds the City? has been initiated in by Group 484, STEALTH.unlimitd and Cultural Center REX in Belgrade. It is organised with support of Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia. The first edition took place from 17 - 19 June 2010.
